Maintaining a positive attitude and putting on a happy face in the dental office, even when you don’t feel like it on the inside, can be challenging but not impossible. Being at the dental office can be stressful for patients, and we want to be sure to exude kindness and reassurance that it’s all going to be okay and that we are going to take good care of them.

In the event you have a lot going on outside of work, we need to remember to try to check in at work with our professional selves. We are here to serve people/patients, and we want them to leave happy.

If you’re struggling, here are some strategies to help you navigate keeping your personal challenges outside of the dental office:

  1. Self-awareness: Start by acknowledging your true feelings and being self-aware. Recognize that everyone has off days, and occasionally feeling down or overwhelmed is okay. By acknowledging your emotions, you can take proactive steps to address them and prevent them from negatively impacting your interactions with others.
  2. Find motivation and purpose: Reflect on the reasons that initially drew you to the dental profession. Rediscover your passion for helping patients improve their oral health and well-being. Remind yourself of the positive impact you have on their lives. Focusing on your purpose can help shift your mindset and inspire a more positive outlook.
  3. Practice self-care: Prioritize self-care to improve your overall well-being. Engage in activities that bring you joy and help reduce stress. Whether exercising, hobbies, spending time with loved ones, or engaging in mindfulness practices, taking care of yourself physically and mentally will help you cultivate a more positive attitude.
  4. Positive affirmations and mindset: Incorporate positive affirmations into your daily routine. Remind yourself of your strengths, abilities, and achievements. Focus on the aspects of your work that you enjoy and find fulfilling. Adopting a positive mindset and consciously choosing to focus on the good can significantly impact your attitude and interactions with others.
  5. Seek support: Reach out to supportive colleagues or trusted friends who can provide a listening ear and offer encouragement. Sharing your feelings with others can provide perspective and help you find solutions or coping strategies.
  6. Take breaks and recharge: If possible, take short breaks throughout the day to recharge and reset. Stepping away from your work environment for a few minutes can help alleviate stress and give you a chance to collect your thoughts. Use this time to engage in activities that help lift your mood, such as deep breathing exercises or listening to uplifting music.
  7. Professional development: Continuing to learn and grow in your profession can bring a sense of fulfillment and motivation. Seek opportunities for professional development, attend conferences or seminars, and stay updated with the latest advancements in dentistry. Enhancing your knowledge and skills can reignite your passion for your work and improve your overall attitude.

Remember: being genuine and authentic is important, even when putting on a happy face. While it’s normal to have off days, making an effort to maintain a positive attitude can benefit both your well-being and the experience of those around you in the dental office, including your team members and patients.
