Boost your Productivity with these 7 Tips

As a business owner, you always have too many things on your plate. The to-do list can seem both overwhelming and never-ending. You want to be more productive, but you’re just not sure how. Bryant Consultants wants to help, so we compiled this list of seven tips to boost your productivity.

Tip 1: Declutter

Once you get to the office to start your day, take a few minutes to declutter your desk and streamline your workspace. This also allows you to accomplish something right at the start of the day and get the ball rolling. Carry this same mindset to your home and declutter for five or 10 minutes before bed. You’ll wake up in a more peaceful space and won’t need to rush in the morning because you’re looking for something.

Tip 2: Break down those to-do lists

If your to-do list has dozens of tasks, it will feel like you’re never going to get it all done. Instead, break up your responsibilities into smaller lists. Have a packed week? Instead, focus on what you can accomplish that day. Is a big deadline looming? Break up the work into smaller tasks that will take less time to complete and help you build momentum.

Tip 3: Do the hard stuff when you’re at your best

Are you a morning person? If so, you may want to address the biggest thing on your schedule first thing in the day. Do you need an hour or two to get rolling? Spend that time clearing out some smaller tasks, then ramp into productivity mode and slay that monster!

Tip 4: Focus on one thing at a time

You may think you’re making the most of your time when you’re multitasking, but studies show that when you switch back and forth between different tasks, it makes you less productive, less efficient, and raises the likelihood of mistakes. Instead, tackle one task at a time. You’ll get done more quickly, and the result will be of higher quality, too.

Tip 5: Take short breaks

Are you one of those business owners who takes pride in how many hours you work a day or how long you can work in one stretch? We’ve got news for you… you’re actually doing yourself a disservice. Working until you’re worn out will lead to burnout and decrease your ability to process information. Instead, take regular breaks, whether that means just standing up and stretching your legs, running a quick errand like taking out the trash, or walking to a nearby café for a jolt of caffeine.

Tip 6: Follow the two-minute rule

Take a look at your to-do list. Do you have anything that you can accomplish in two minutes or less? Go ahead and do it at the start of your day. It might mean sending an email, returning a phone call, or reviewing your schedule for the day. Immediately targeting and completing these two-minute tasks saves you time in the long run and gives you more opportunity to focus on the bigger tasks.

Tip 7: Just say no

Whether you’re a people pleaser or someone who enjoys the challenge of tackling multiple things at once, many of us have a problem saying no. If accepting a request forces you to punt your goals for the day, say no or suggest an alternative. There’s a tremendous amount of power in saying no, whether it means taking charge of your work time or avoiding a social obligation that will drain you. Learning to say no also helps establish clear, healthy boundaries.
