What is your process when a new employee starts at your office? Are you so overjoyed they know your practice management software or basic dental assisting skills that you have them jump right in and go from there? Or do you take the time onboarding them, ensuring that they understand their job role and have clear expectations? Do you follow the Four C’s? Dr. Talya Bauer from the SHRM Foundation states that successful onboarding involves proactively covering the Four C’s.

The Four C’s stand for Compliance, Clarification, Culture, and Connection. We’ve outlined a brief description below.

Compliance:

New hire paperwork, learn the rules and policies of the organization. Define expectations such as hours, uniforms, leave requests, etc.

Clarification:

Confirms new employees understand their roles and responsibilities.

Culture:

Shares the daily routine of the office. Give new team members a tour and share how their contributions will affect the organization.

Connection:

This involves the team member developing relationships with their peers and making the new hire feel like part of the team. They can share what they do and how their roles can work together. It's always nice to assign a "new hire buddy" in addition to a go-to person for questions and help.

Career Builder published a story called The 10 Commandments of Employee Onboarding that describes why onboarding is so important to do out of the gate. When new employees are fully onboarding, it reduces the time/cost of learning on the job; this will allow them to start performing their work responsibilities sooner and at a high level. Thorough and proper onboarding requires less training post onboarding, saving other employees time by not having to train them again. Good onboarding reduces stress and employee turnover and increases job satisfaction. When properly onboarded, new employees feel valued, committed, and included as part of the team.

Be sure that you’re setting your new hire up for success. We’ve included a new hire checklist that will help tremendously with onboarding. You can break it down into daily or weekly tasks for a smooth process.
