Myofunctional Therapy Coaching

[vc_row no_margin=”true” class=”mtn”][vc_column width=”2/3″][text_output]Due to the environment in which we live, our food choices and diet habits are in a downward spiral that is contributing to Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMD). As these bad habits continue, we will witness an increasing need for treatment of OMD around the globe. Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders involve muscles of the face, mouth, jaw, or lips. Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders often impacts the need for dental treatments such as orthodontics, oral hygiene, and various other dental issues. Not only does OMD affect our oral health, but other areas of the body as well such as speech-language therapy, sleep patterns, nutrition, and brain and facial development.

Our body’s balance depends on the act of swallowing. To swallow properly, muscles and nerves in the tongue, cheeks and throat must work together in harmony. How would you know whether or not you swallow properly? A normal swallow occurs when the tip of the tongue presses firmly against the roof of the mouth (hard palate), which is slightly behind the front teeth. The tongue also plays a vital role in swallowing properly by acting in harmony with all the additional muscles involved when we swallow. Also, the hard palate absorbs the force created by the tongue. When these aspects work together in harmony, swallowing is correct and efficient. When OMD occurs, both diet and weight may be affected. When the muscles of the face, mouth, jaw, or lips do not function together properly, it affects our ability to swallow properly. Correct swallowing patterns depend on a harmonious relationship between the facial muscles, throat and mouth. If we are not able to swallow properly, our body begins to suffer because a well-balanced diet may not be easy to achieve. If food is not chewed properly, the body is not able to absorb the necessary nutrients that it needs.

Therefore, correct swallowing patterns are imperative to prevent a variety of health problems. Of equal importance is the resting position of the tongue. If the tongue is not held in proper positioning when the mouth is at rest, it may cause damage to the oral cavity and muscles throughout the head and neck.
